A Million Little Pieces

A Million Little Pieces
By:"James Frey"
Published on 2003-04-15 by Rutgers University Press

Intense, unpredictable, and instantly engaging, A Million Little Pieces is a story of drug and alcohol abuse and rehabilitation as it has never been told before. Recounted in visceral, kinetic prose, and crafted with a forthrightness that rejects piety, cynicism, and self-pity, it brings us face-to-face with a provocative new understanding of the nature of addiction and the meaning of recovery. By the time he entered a drug and alcohol treatment facility, James Frey had taken his addictions to near-deadly extremes. He had so thoroughly ravaged his body that the facilityís doctors were shocked he was still alive. The ensuing torments of detoxification and withdrawal, and the never-ending urge to use chemicals, are captured with a vitality and directness that recalls the seminal eye-opening power of William Burroughsís Junky. But A Million Little Pieces refuses to fit any mold of drug literature. Inside the clinic, James is surrounded by patients as troubled as he is -- including a judge, a mobster, a one-time world-champion boxer, and a fragile former prostitute to whom he is not allowed to speak ó but their friendship and advice strikes James as stronger and truer than the clinicís droning dogma of How to Recover. James refuses to consider himself a victim of anything but his own bad decisions, and insists on accepting sole accountability for the person he has been and the person he may become--which runs directly counter to his counselors' recipes for recovery. James has to fight to find his own way to confront the consequences of the life he has lived so far, and to determine what future, if any, he holds. It is this fight, told with the charismatic energy and power of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, that is at the heart of A Million Little Pieces: the fight between one young manís will and the ever-tempting chemical trip to oblivion, the fight to survive on his own terms, for reasons close to his own heart. A Million Little Pieces is an uncommonly genuine account of a life destroyed and a life reconstructed. It is also the introduction of a bold and talented literary voice.

Alcohol Lied to Me: The Intelligent Escape from Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol Lied to Me: The Intelligent Escape from Alcohol Addiction
By:"Mr Craig Beck"
Published on 2015-06-26 by Lulu Press, Inc

Craig Beck was a successful and functioning professional man in spite of a ‘two bottles of wine a night’ drinking habit. For 20 years, he struggled with problem drinking, all the time refusing to label himself an alcoholic because he did not think he met the stereotypical image that the word portrayed. Discover why all 'will-power' based attempts to stop drinking will fail (exactly as they are destined to do). Slowly Craig discovered the truth about alcohol addiction, and one by one, all the lies he had previously believed started to fall apart. For the first time, he noticed that he genuinely did not want to drink anymore. In this book, he will lead you though the same remarkable process. No need to declare yourself an alcoholic. A permanent cure, not a lifetime struggle. No group meetings or expensive rehab. No humiliation, no pain and 100% no ‘will-power’ required. Treats the source of the problem, not the symptoms.

The Road To Destruction Has An Exit

The Road To Destruction Has An Exit
By:"Shamus O"
Published on 2013-03-11 by Xlibris Corporation

At birth, I was brought home in a limousine. I was born into affluence, an influential family and a promising future. At age thirteen, I had my first drink. My high school years were full of fun, friends, success in athletics and respect. I drank. In my twenties and thirties, I owned an advertising agency, a catering business, a used car dealership, acquired my pilot’s license, a thirty foot Winnebago, sail boats, a home, a wife, and three kids. I drank more. In my forties, I lost my advertising business, my catering business, my car business, my pilot’s license, my driver’s license and got my first DUI. I drank more even after admitting I was an alcoholic. My early fifties found me becoming general manager and Vice President of a multi-million dollar manufacturing company. My drinking increased from alcoholism to addiction. At age fifty-five I was cuffed and shackled in a caged bus to two years in prison with a felony 5 DUI record. My wife filed for divorce, I lost my job and lost my financial security through bad investments and legal fees. I found the exit off this road to destruction. At fifty-seven I am happy, spiritual, sober, believing in myself again and blessed with the return of my family, my home and my dreams. Get in and ride with me on my journey to sobriety and salvation.

Hijacking the Brain

Hijacking the Brain
By:"Louis Teresi"
Published on 2011-10 by AuthorHouse

Hijacking the Brain provides the first-ever scientific explanation for the success of Twelve-Step programs. Hijacking the Brain examines data provided by recent rapid growth in the fields of neuroscience, neuroimaging, psychology, sociobiology and interpersonal neurobiology that have given us new, dramatic insights into the neural and hormonal correlates of stress and addiction, cognitive decline with addiction, as well as for the relative success of Twelve-Step Programs of recovery. Addiction is recognized by experts as an organic brain disease, and most experts promote Twelve-Step programs (AA, NA, CA, etc.) which invoke a 'spiritual solution' for recovery. To date, no one has described why these programs work. 'Hijack' tells us why. In 'Hijack, ' the role of 'working The Steps' for reducing stress and becoming emotionally centered is discussed in depth. A full chapter is devoted to the rewarding and comforting physiology of meditation and the spiritual experience. The author uses examples from animal sociobiology, as well as sophisticated human brain-imaging studies, to demonstrate that empathic socialization and altruism are instinctive and 'naturally rewarding' and, along with Step Work, act as a substitute for the 'synthetic rewards' of drugs of abuse. 'Hijack' does not challenge the Steps or the Traditions of Twelve-Step programs. The sole intention of Hijacking the Brain is to 'connect the dots' between an 'organic brain disease' and a 'spiritual solution' with sound physical, scientific evidence. Avoiding strict scientific language as much as possible, 'Hijack' is written for the layperson and abundantly illustrated.

The Yellow Van:

The Yellow Van:
By:"Gayle Sabbe"
Published on 2009-03-30 by Xlibris Corporation

A Story about Schizoaffective and Alcohol Addiction is a true account of my struggle with schizophrenia and bipolar illness. It has been a life of acting sane and medicating with alcohol. I usually tell people that I went on a “twelve-year” drunk. It was only after I got sober, seventeen years ago, at a treatment center, that the mania began to show. I was actually hypomanic and functional at work until 1999. By this time, I had long sold the van, and was finally faced with homelessness. I was actively psychotic for four years and was hospitalized four times. I am currently in remission, but I have to be careful. This is my prescription: 1) take your medication, 2) see a psychiatrist, 3) see a therapist, 4) don’t drink or drug, 5) work on your self every day. It is reported that one in two hundred people have schizoaffective disorder. Probably half are addicted to alcohol or drugs. Little is known about this disorder and people don’t like to talk about it. Rather than this approach, I am exposing my life to provide insight and reduce stigma of all people who are afflicted by this devastating illness.

Alcohol, Addiction and Christian Ethics

Alcohol, Addiction and Christian Ethics
By:"Christopher C. H. Cook"
Published on 2006-05-04 by Cambridge University Press

Addictive disorders are characterised by a division of the will, in which the addict is attracted both by a desire to continue the addictive behaviour and also by a desire to stop it. Academic perspectives on this predicament usually come from clinical and scientific standpoints, with the 'moral model' rejected as outmoded. But Christian theology has a long history of thinking and writing on such problems and offers insights which are helpful to scientific and ethical reflection upon the nature of addiction. Chris Cook reviews Christian theological and ethical reflection upon the problems of alcohol use and misuse, from biblical times until the present day. Drawing particularly upon the writings of St Paul the Apostle and Augustine of Hippo, a critical theological model of addiction is developed. Alcohol dependence is also viewed in the broader ethical perspective of the use and misuse of alcohol within communities.
